We added a couple new fruit trees to the homestead 2020
This year is the first I can remember that the purple plum we planted has set on a full bloom. The peach trees also have had a very good bloom, and the apple trees which have started to bloom and lost to freezing weather are putting on a nice bloom as well.
One of our cherry trees is doing pretty well, but the other isn’t thriving at all. So while we were shopping groceries, we stopped by the garden center in search of a cherry tree or two.
No such luck. But they did have a variety of plum, peach, pear and fig trees. We chose a plum and pea
The trees were both about 6′ tall in the buckets. I used the backhoe on our little kubota to dig out the holes, about a foot deep and about 2′ diameter. In the bottom I put a good bit of chicken yard bedding/compost, then added some miracle grow potting soil mix, then put the tree in and added some more potting soil mix around the tree ball, then mixed in some the native soil with the potting mix to bring it to the ground level. The remaining native soil I mixed with additional chicken yard bedding and surrounded the tree base about 8 inches away from the tree. We then put wet cardboard around the top of that to help keep weed growth down
